Northwest Territories - Registering as a Notary Public

On this page, you will learn how to get yourself appointed as a notary public in the Northwest Territories.

Application Process: Northwest Territories

The Minister of Justice of the Northwest Territories has the power to appoint people as notary public empowered to notarize documents for use in the territory.

Generally speaking, to become a notary public you must:

  • a complete an application form;

  • a complete an examination form; and

  • pay the $100 application fee

You must score 100% on the exam in order to become a notary public in the Northwest Territories. Once you have passed the exam, and finalized all the other requirements, the government will send you a certificate of appointment. However, before you can start notarizing your documents, you must send the government a copy of your notary seal. Sending a copy of your notary seal ensures that your notarized documents can be authenticated and then used overseas (very very important step!).

Lawyers in the Northwest Territories are automatically considered to be notaries. However, as with non-lawyer notaries, lawyers must still submit the application form and submit a copy of their seal to ensure (as above) their seal can be authenticated.

Non-lawyer notaries are only appointed for three years and must constantly renew their commission if they wish to continue practicing.

You can submit your application package through the mail and pay with Visa. If there is an error on your application, the government will return your application fee (but don't worry, you can always reapply).

The Notary Public Course hosted by Notary Assist Inc. covers all of the subjects in the Northwest Territories Notary Exam. We strongly encourage potential Notaries to take advantage of the resources compiled in the courses to help in their studies and practice as Notaries.
