Manitoba - Registering as a Notary Public

On this page, you will learn how to register to be a notary public in Manitoba.

Application Process: Manitoba

*please note that only Lawyers are permitted to be notaries in Manitoba

The provincial government of Manitoba only permits lawyers to be appointed as notaries. To apply, you must also have a clean criminal record. You have to file paperwork, pay the appropriate fee, and wait (usually about 4 weeks). The government department you are dealing with is the Companies Office in Manitoba. While lawyers are often closely associated with the notary profession in Manitoba, the act of notarizing documents is not considered to be legal advice. Technically, the notarization of documents is a separate profession.

The form you need to fill out and file, can be found here!

Steps:

  1. Fill out the form, please note that the name on the rolls of the Law Society of Manitoba must match exactly with the name you place on the application

  2. You must sign the oath of office in front of a commissioner of oaths or a notary public (this can be done online if you wanted to save time)

  3. You can pay the fee by cheque or money order, made out to the Minister of Finance

Send the completed package to the following address: Commissioner for Oaths/Notary Public, Woodsworth Building, 1034-405 Broadway, Winnipeg, MB, R3C 3L6

Approximately four weeks later, the Companies Office will mail you your Certificate of Appointment, however, you should not start notarizing documents. Included in this package will be a letter you need to mail in to "register" your signature and seal. Your seal must exactly match your name as it was on your application, including middle names and any secondary last names. The letter you receive will include a space to put your seal and a copy of your signature. This is a very important process as the letter registers your notarial seal with the Companies Office and Global Affairs Canada (an important requirement to legalize and authenticate documents). The Companies Office will contact you by email/by phone to tell you your seal and signature have been accepted. Once you receive this confirmation, off to the races!

Once registered, we strongly urge you to take the training course for Manitoba notaries to ensure you know all there is to know. You can click on the purchase course button above.
